Thrombotic Thrombocytopenic Purpura

Thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura is a rare blood disorder in which tiny clots form in small blood vessels, using up platelets and damaging organs such as the brain, heart and kidneys. It is caused by a severe lack of an enzyme called ADAMTS13, usually because the immune system attacks it, and less often because of an inherited gene change. Treatment includes plasma exchange, immune-suppressing medicines and newer targeted therapies.
